The skin is a protective, innervated and exposed to the outside world organ that decodes a wide range of tactile, thermal and noxious stimuli. This involves a connection between sensory neurons and the outermost part of the skin, the epidermis, which is made up of keratinocytes. Among skin pathologies, sensitive skin syndrome (SSS) affects about 50% of the population and is correlated with small-fibers neuropathies resulting in neuropathic pain. We have developed at NETRI compartmentalized microfluidic devices with an enhanced fluidic isolation that allow co-culture of sensory neurons and keratinocyte and pply stimuli only to neurons and/or keratinocytes.
